SAP Calculations Explained
The Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) is the UK’s official methodology for assessing the energy performance of new dwellings. It provides a standardized framework for estimating energy demand and carbon emissions, which is essential for demonstrating Part L compliance and informing statutory Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs).
- Data Gathering: Collection of architectural drawings, fabric specifications, and heating/ventilation design details.
- Energy Modelling: Building a detailed thermal model of the dwelling using approved SAP software.
- Compliance Assessment: Comparing the predicted Dwelling Emission Rate (DER) and Fabric Energy Efficiency (DFEE) against regulatory targets.
- Optimization & Strategy: Advising on design refinements or low-carbon technologies if initial calculations fall short.
- Final Certification: Verification of 'as-built' status and production of the official SAP BREL documents and Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
